"Chad Ross’ recent Deadly Snakes tenure may be the most boldface-worthy item on his resumé, but it’s his less-publicized gig as a former Black Mountain roadie that provides the instant context for his new band, Quest for Fire (also featuring fellow Snake Andrew Moszynski, Cursed drummer Mike Maxymuik and No No Zero bassist Josh Bauman). Stoner-rock has never been a premium commodity in this town — despite the best efforts of disparate, disconnected ambassadors like Sons of Otis and Nadja — but Quest for Fire’s debut could be the rallying point to unite aged Hendrix hippies and new-school Dead Meadow bong-loaders alike. The album’s track sequence is effectively designed for easy indoctrination, leading off with a four-to-the-floor, radio-single-formatted blast (“Bison Eyes”) that suggests a nefarious plan to lure in Queens of the Stone Age fans, before stretching out to better explore stoner-rock’s pastoral (“You Are Always Loved”), cosmic (“I’ve Been Trying to Leave”) and metallic (“Hawk That Hunts the Walking”) qualities. But Quest for Fire sound most assured when fusing these core components into a hellacious whole, as on the monstrous, Spacemen 3–splattered closer (“Next to the Fire”) — proof that whatever fire these dudes are searching for has most definitely been found.
