Heirs - Alchera

"Heirs is the marriage of dark and light. The pain and hopelessness of addiction vs the elation of freedom.

The name Heirs originates from an ideal of "hunting and gathering" musical ideas, and formulating these ideas into an improved version. To write music, without paying some sort of tribute to the artists influencing your everyday subconsciousness, is a dishonest practice. The name stands as a allegory - to be the Heirs of a musical history and to expand on this, becoming a part of history themselves.

Heirs began as a solo project by Damian Coward (Maps, Love Like... Electrocution) in late 2006, founded by a importunity to create a personal sound and direction. Heirs expanded its lineup during 2008 and consists of Brent Stegeman (Whitehorse, Love Like... Electrocution) and Ian Jackson (Damn Arms) on guitars, Laura Bradfield on bass and Coward on drums.

Heirs' debut full-length "Alchera" is a 43 minute movement of oppressive instrumental power, cyclic ritualism and bleak hallucinogenic revelation. Recorded at Head Gap Studios by Neil Thomason in the heat waves of Melbourne in Januuary 2009 and mastered by James Plotkin (Isis, Khanate, Burning Witch), the 6 pieces recorded capture the band's live volume - a blanket of sound traversing a rolling dynamic landscape.

Drawing influence from MICHAEL GIRA and his SWANS legacy, the sledgehammer riffs and industrial pummel of GODFLESH, and continuing Stegeman's incense shrouded low-end incantations from his work with doom dealers WHITEHORSE, combined with Jackson's reverb-soaked noise, Alchera strips bare the needless excesses of post-rock and heavy metal in favour of something much more concise and affecting. A lurching, drugged-out specter - holding solace in one hand, and vengeance in the other.

From the seething metallic buzz and bluster of the opening track "Plague Asphyx", through to the crowning low-end turbulence of "Russia", the recording is an archetype for an existence shrouded in confusion, joy, disappointment and addiction.

Heirs are touring Nationally throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Europe/UK for the rest of 2009. Dates can be found on their website - www.heirs.com.au

Thee Oh Sees

"Thee Of Sees has been mostly compared to theB-52’s. They’re not too keen on this comparison, as well they shouldn’t be. Thee Oh Sees have a lo-fi electric-acoustic sound that’s usually soaked in reverb, making it as if you can hear and see the exact room they recorded in. It creates a very distinct mood that fits their style, lyrics, and melodies to a tee.

What most people focus on with them is that Mr. Dwyer is in the band. While it’s certainly a notable quality, the recent band members bring so much more to the table. The earliest recordings are Dwyer’s solo recordings, mostly single instrument/vocal ditties that you can hear him working out. They’re an intimate portrait of John, but without the recent material, the portrait would simply be incomplete.

With the addition of Brigid Dawson, Petey Dammit, and Mike Shoun the sound has grown into the landscape that one man couldn’t create alone. Brigid’s soprano voice brings an almost hauntingly sensitive aspect to the lyrics and melodies, while Petey and Shoun complete the frame in its entirety. " ~

Uptempo Blues Machine

"In 2002 Uptempo Bluesmachines established themselves as a multi-faceted hard rock force of nature. Tight, crisp, rowdy rockers, melodic songs and a series of groovy stoner metal tracks were born.

The intensity, the darkness, the melodies, the drive, all of the above and more, according to Uptempo Bluesmachines frontman Greasy T. Those are the things that define UBM's passion. At the UBM's beginning years they blasted on all fields. With a formation of four guys: Stanny, Greasy T., Marly and Chris Dust, primed to capture the attention and the balls of the rock 'n roll fans. After four years though, the band's set up changed. Chris Dust decided to leave the band. Nevertheless, UBM still fully alive and thirsty, started searching for fresh blood. Eventually found it two new members, named Uncle Sam and Mister Scarecrow. Finding the band spending more time to craft songs, and it shows." ~ MySpace

Giant Brain

"Thorn of Thrones, Giant Brain (Small Stone) - Classic Detroit boogie echoes through a soundscape of processed beats, live drums, Deep Purple keyboards, and acoustic guitars. Mostly instrumental, it wanders purposefully and, when it does get lost, a torrent of electric guitar savagely enters to act as a compass. Highlights include the pounding “Relentful Relentless” and the delicately lovely “Asian Love Song What?”. - Lee Ballinger

Dug Dug's

"Mexican garage rock legends Los Dug Dug's were led by singer/multi-instrumentalist Armando Nava, born in Durango, Durango in 1946. At 15 he acquired his first guitar, and at 17 he joined his first band, Xippos Rock -- when their original frontman quit, Nava assumed lead vocal duties, and after graduating high school the group toured the Tijuana region, with Nava's salesman father driving their van and conducting business along the way. While on the road, Nava made the executive decision to change their name from Xippos Rock to Los Dug Dug's -- the name being the abbreviation of their home city and state -- while playing in Texas he scored copies of early Beatles records, and the band became not only to the first in Mexico to cover the Fab Four, but also the first to sing all of their material (covers and originals) in English. After an extended stint as the house band at the Tijuana strip joint Fantasitas, Los Dug Dug's relocated to Mexico City in 1966 -- a series of personnel changes were afoot, however, and soon only Nava and only vocalist Jorge de la Torre remained from the lineup that first set out from Durango. After earning a rabid fan following in Mexico City, the group signed to RCA to record their debut single, the children's television theme "Chicotito Si, Chicotito No" -- they also headlined a pair of 1967 films, El Mundo Loco de los Jovenes and Cinco de Chocolate y Una de Fresa. In all, Los Dug Dug's cut ten singles for RCA while in Mexico City, including covers of U.S. pop hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Hanky Panky." After returning to Tijuana in 1968, Los Dug Dug's -- now consisting of Nava de la Torre, guitarist Gustavo Garayzar, bassist Genero Garcia, and drummer Jorge Torres Aguayo -- took up residence at the popular Sans Sous Ci club. After American tourist Frank Mangano caught their act, he was so impressed that he offered to bankroll a trip to New York City -- there the group played a handful of live dates and recorded a few demos, but Mangano refused to fund the $5000.00 musicians' union fees necessary to earn Los Dug Dug's the opportunity to play Manhattan's larger venues. With little choice except to return to Mexico, the group began work on its first LP for RCA Mexico, but long-simmering creative differences between Nava and de la Torre forced the latter's resignation after the album was completed, and by the time the resulting psychedelic opus Lost in My Worldappeared in 1971, Los Dug Dug's were essentially no more. The singles "World of Love" and "Eclipse" were nevertheless huge Latin American hits, and in 1972, Nava revived the group as a power trio -- now, with the majority of Mexican groups singing in English, he reversed the trend, performing in Spanish on 1972's Smog. For 1974's Cambia Cambia, Los Dug Dug's sported a clean-cut look in keeping with their music's evolution to more concise, melodic pop approach -- RCA did little to support the album, however, and 1975's El Loco<. Despite endless lineup changes, Nava has nevertheless kept Los Dug Dug's an ongoing concern in the decades since -- the group most often appears at his Mexico City nightclub La Reunion." Brimstone Solar Radiation Band

"If Lynyrd Skynyrd had starred in Hair, instead of a bunch of dancing hippies, or if Steve Earle had sung in Jefferson Airplane, maybe it would have sounded something like Solstice, The Brimstone Solar Radiation Bands second album. On their first record they painted the sky orange, on Solstice theyve decorated the rest of the landscape with a colourful outcome. The cowboy landscape is just as present on this album as on the latter, but it seems more like a scene from Yellow Submarine rather than Lucky Luke. Solstice marks both the longest and shortest day of the year, The Brimstone s Solstice sounds like an offering to the sun on the sunniest day of the year. The band has grown quite a lot since last time, their debut was more than promising, but this record reveals a band that has complete control of what theyre doing. They dont just operate in a genre, they own it, the handiwork is impeccable and the creativity in a league of its own. In short terms you dont need much more than The Brimstones Solstice and a spot of sunshine to secure a successful summer holiday. The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band" ~ MySpace

zZz

"zZz is the sleazy steamin' locomotive barreling out of Amsterdam-a city, if ever there was one, that needs no introduction. By combining the doom-laden vocals of the late Ian Curtis and thedark comedic psychobilly madnezZz of Cramps singer Lux Interior, a monstrous thunder is letloose. Organ, drums and vocals is all it takes for this duo to serve up their Molotov cocktail of violent trance, psychedelic electro wave, garage soul and dirty rock & roll." ~ Sound of zZz
