Krel

"Krel was a psychedelic / space rock band that formed out of an outfit named the Purple Otter Trotters, who made their name releasing a cassette of Hawkwind covers and playing at Travellers Aid Trust gigs. As Krel they toured extensively between releasing cassette-only albums, supporting the likes of Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind. The band eventually splintered in the late 1990s, bandmember Mr Dibs left the band in 1995 and went on to form Spacehead" ~ Last.Fm

"Meanwhile...The band are delighted to announce that they have been reawakened from a hideous state of limbo and inactivity in 2006.

They have reformed themselves out of moss and discarded detritus found around the urban wasteland. The Band have now played their first live show in over a decade at the Malvern Youth Center (Saturday 18th November 2006)

Omnia Opera have been rejuvenated with new members completing the full ships crew. Replacing Mr Ade Scholefield on Synths is “Mr Alf Hardy” from Coventry, full time space cadet formerly of “Dave Brock and the Agents of Chaos” (Hawkwind) and “Tubilah Dog” Both bands of the highest sonic quality.

The replacement of the “Clone Drones” the two “female hermaphrodite singers” has also been necessary the old models were in a shocking state of disrepair and unable to function their diodes having burnt out long ago in the soft moss, now preserved in a vault in Kidderminster.

They have been replaced by “Plumaris” & “Caitlin Beta”

These two machines have been programmed to provide the necassary vocalizations and movements. Original members Mr Jones, Mr Lloyd and Mr Spragg complete the crew on Bass, Guitar and Drums respectively.

Also joining the ships crew is the long lost “Captain Bagley” Providing Stage show antics and a puzzeling visual antidote with the live show aspect.

A special mention goes out regarding Mr Steve Price who's great efforts playing 2nd Guitar on the night of the first gig will always be remebered affectionatly.

"Dave Schmidt aka Sula Bassana was born in Berlin at the 27th of January 1968.

Dave first entered stage in 1985 or 86, can..t remember, as keyboardplayer of the electronic duo Solaris. Several electronic duos and trios followed. In 1994 he co-founded the psychedelic rockband Liquid Visions. They released 5 albums and some singles on several labels. In 1997 he founded Zone Six to create spontaneous psychedelic spacerock trips. Zone Six are still existing and released 5 albums. In 1998 Andi (Growing Seeds) and Dave formed the studioproject Weltraumstaunen to record some excellent freak outs. Two albums were released on Nasoni-Records. In 1998 he moved to Bayreuth (Bavaria) to fill the drummers seat in the spacerockband Growing Seeds. But in early 1999 they gave up and he went back to Berlin. They just released one vinyl-single on Pleitegeier-Records. In early 2003 he left Liquid Visions.

There was also a little episode with a nice ambient, drum'n'bass and dub-project called Space Shuttle Pilots, but sadly without any proper release.

Sula's first solo-album Dreamer was released on Nasoni-Records in 2002. More albums followed. Dave played in several projects, such as Psychedelic Monsterjam, together with Mani Neumeier on drums and Ax Genrich on guitar. Two live-CDs were released on Sunhair-Records. In 2003 he co-founded the psychedelic-postrock-project Südstern 44, together with Ellipopelli (ex Growing Seeds) and Julius K (Zone Six). There was one album on Nasoni-Records and one CD-R released by the band.

In late summer 2006 he moved to Austria and founded his label sulatron-records, plays guitar in the young local rockband Alice Dog and has started a new project called Interkosmos, with Sergio Ceballos (guitar and vocals, from RIP KC, Spain), Bernhard Fasching (drums, from The Blowing Lewinsky) and Dave on bass. He also played some gigs as guitarplayer with the Øresund Space Collective in Germany and Norway.

He also jammed on stage with the following bands and musicians: Gas Giant, Circle, Damo Suzuki, Keiji Miashita, Horst Porkert, The Movements, Electric Orange, Niagaragain, Spheric Lounge, Annot Rhül and members of Seid... mostly in Germany, but also in Austria, Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and Norway.

The latest project is based at his new home, together with his landlord and saxophone-wizard Mario Rechtern and spontaneous guests: Das Alte Haus." ~ MySpace

Into Space

Stone Oak Cosmonaut are a new Dutch trio who play a monster blend of Space Rock, Metal and Stoner Rock. The band consists of Fred Stack on "space guitar", Peter on drums and Von Trippenhof on bass, electronics and vocals. And if the name Von Trippenhof sounds familiar it's probably because he did some time in the late 1990s with The Legendary Pink Dots.

The band burst out hot and heavy with "Keph-Tun", a pounding slab of Space-Metal. Swirling alien electronics, crunchy metallic guitar and cosmic space guitar. A solid opener. "A Circle Run" is next and we're now deep in Stoner Space Rock territory. These guys know how to incorporate the electronics into the music so that it all gels nicely. And Von Trippenhof's vocals sound a lot like Wino, so between that and the music this sounds like it could be Spirit Caravan gone Space Rock (I told him that and he had not previously heard of Wino or any of his bands). And again we get a great mixture of heavy stoner and bubbly space guitar, which culminates in a mind-blowing spaced out stoner-psychedelic finale.

"Away in the Laika", "The Gift of the Eyeless Merchant" and "Oh Yeah" are other solid stoner space metal tunes I enjoyed. "The Gift of the Eyeless Merchant" is probably the most intense song of the set. A genuine battlecry for war feel. And Fred really rips up the solos on "Oh Yeah". "A Light in the Dark" starts off dreamily ethereal and trips along like that for a couple minutes before launching into a heavy rocking stoner-metal-space rock blast. It's got some of Von Trippenhof's most potent vocals and a killer cosmic jam segment. "Reborn Again (Latter Day Beelzebub)" is a bit different, having a good time, though totally grungy, rock 'n roll edge to it. It's melodic, almost pop, on the one hand, but in no way dispenses with the powerful metallic flavor of the rest of the album. And interesting song with contrasting styles.

But the highlight… the standout… the ultimate monster of the album, is the two part, 25 minute "Out of Orbit". "Earthless" is part 1, and starts off as an easy paced spacey song with both freaky electronics and proggy synth washes. Soon Von Trippenhof's bass starts to get a groove going, the drumming gets increasingly rocking, and when Fred's guitar kicks in we're in full power trio psych rock mode. Fred briefly plays in a Hendrix style until the band abruptly shift to the now trademark Stone Oak Cosmonaut metallic rocking vibe. And back and forth they go, between intense stoner metal and ripping spaced out psychedelic jamming. Lots going on here, and I really dig the hip shakin' psychedelic boogie-woogie bits. And when we get to part 2 - "Star Voyage" - its 14 blissful minutes of heavy, take no prisoners JAMMING! HEAVY duty metallic, rock 'n rolling SPACE ROCK! Absolutely fucking awesome.

This is without a doubt one of the best albums I've heard this year. Walter at Roadburn should consider these guys for the festival next year, especially given that they're right in his back yard. For fans of First Band From Outer Space, Earthless, Litmus, and of course Hawkwind. Highest as a kite recommendation! ~ aural innovations
